Role Summary
The Tax Manager will lead tax compliance and advisory efforts for Highland Ventures’ real estate-focused portfolio. This role includes managing compliance across federal, state, and local tax jurisdictions, collaborating with external CPA firms, and providing tax consulting services. The candidate will also assist with tax strategy and financial planning for high-net-worth family members, ensuring both current compliance and forward-looking tax efficiency as the company’s portfolio evolves.
Core Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax filings for both the company and affiliated entities.
- Work closely with external CPA firms and internal teams to prepare, review, and submit accurate tax returns.
- Develop comprehensive workpapers to support partnership allocations, basis adjustments, and specific tax transactions.
- Tax Strategy & Consulting
- Analyze tax implications of major transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and financing arrangements, and provide actionable recommendations.
- Collaborate with external tax counsel and CPA firms to structure tax-efficient transactions, such as 1031 exchanges and cost segregation studies.
- Conduct periodic tax reviews to identify opportunities for optimization, risk mitigation, and proactive tax planning.
- Investment & Estate Planning
- Track and report on family investments, offering tax consulting to ensure efficient management and compliance.
- Assist with estate planning initiatives for high-net-worth individuals, addressing complex financial and family dynamics.
- Provide advisory services for trusts, estates, partnerships, and private foundations, ensuring compliance and financial optimization.
- Legal & Compliance Documentation
- Review and interpret key documents, including operating agreements, letters of intent, and purchase agreements, to ensure tax compliance and strategic alignment.
- Stay current with tax laws, regulations, and industry trends to recommend adjustments to the company's tax strategy as needed.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Act as the primary liaison between internal finance teams and external tax advisors to maintain cohesive tax strategies and compliance.
- Foster relationships with legal counsel and external advisors to align tax strategy with overall company goals, while also managing costs effectively.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of tax experience, ideally with a focus on real estate, partnerships, and high-net-worth individuals.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting and relevant tax laws for real estate.
- Proficiency with tax software and technology, with a commitment to leveraging technology for process improvements.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple engagements and coordinating with both internal and external teams.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with strong analytical abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification or similar credential.
- Experience in estate planning and tax strategy for high-net-worth individuals and complex family structures.
- Previous experience in a public accounting firm.

Position type and expected hours of work
This is a full-time, on-site position based in Brentwood, TN. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.
